The Consistency of Syntactical Treatments of Knowledge

چکیده
The relative expressive power of a sentential operator U]o~ is compared to that of a syntactical predicate L('c~') in the setting of first-order logics. Despite results by Montague and by Thomason that claim otherwise, any of the so-called CCmodal" logics of knowledge and belief can be translated into classical first-order logics that have a corresponding predicate on sentences.

Syntactical Treatments of Propositional Attitudes
Syntactical treatments of propositional attitudes are attractive to artiicial intelligence researchers. But results of Montague 12] and Thomason 16] seem to show that syntactical treatments are not viable. They show that if representation languages are suuciently expressive, then axiom schemes characterizing knowledge and belief give rise to paradox. De Rivi eres and Levesque 6] characterized a...
متن کاملA semantical perspective on verification of knowledge
The usual approaches to verification of knowledge in the literature have a rather practical nature, and are sometimes ad hoc and depending on the syntactical structure of a particular knowledge representation language in the definitions of the properties that are tested. In this paper a more principled investigation provides a well-defined semantical basis, independent of any particular syntact...
متن کاملFrom Logic Programming Semantics to the Consistency of Syntactical Treatments of Knowledge and Belief
This paper concerns formal theories for reasoning about the knowledge and belief of agents. It has seemed attractive to researchers in artificial intelligence to formalise these propositional attitudes as predicates of first-order predicate logic. This allows the agents to express stronger introspective beliefs and engage in stronger meta-reasoning than in the classical modal operator approach....
متن کاملVerification Issues in Combining Independently Consistent Theories
This paper addresses verification issues in combining knowledge bases or theories from different sources. Tile knowledge may be acquired using direct knowledge acquisition or inductive learning methods. Keeping the consistency of knowledge becomes all important issue when integrating two or more knowledge bases. Several independently consistent knowledge bases may give an inconsistent system wh...
متن کاملAssessing the Levels of Knowledge About Common Causes and Treatments of Traumatic Dental Injuries Among General Dentists in the City of Bandar Abbas in 2018
Background and Aim: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are among the urgent challenges in dental sciences. These types of trauma are a common dental health problem, which may affect hard tissues and tooth-supporting structures. Since dentists’ knowledge and practice are vital for TDI treatments, this study aimed to assess the levels of knowledge of TDIs among general dentists working in Bandar Ab...
